The Glauc is almost certainly the 2nd-winter that was at Throckmorton (Worcs) on Sunday and at Didcot 2 weekends ago.It does have a sepia brown iris which looks very dark at more than 80 yards. However close up the pupil can just be made out. The Bill tip is pale with messy grey not jet black sub-terminal band, also blotchey (not barred) brown on ivory white plumage. At a distance it could be mistaken for the sort of pale 1st years that you see from Feb onwards.  (Info from Steve Whitehouse)

Alan Dean notes the following about the YL Gull:

"The YLG at B H Water is the same individual that has been in the area all year. I have photographed it on various occasions to monitor and illustrate its development in appearance and moult. It’s now moulted majority of coverts, tertials and p1 to p6. P7 and p8 are in pin and p9 and p10 are old. Thus it’s now close to 3W plumage, despite the date (YLG moult a bit earlier than e.g. HG, as you’ll know). The change in appearance from clear 2S plumage in June (http://www.deanar.btinternet.co.uk/wmgulls/YlG/260510BHW.htm) to current appearance in August – close to 3W plumage (http://www.deanar.btinternet.co.uk/wmgulls/YlG/130810BHW.htm) - can be seen in these images on my website. Earlier images show it in 2W plumage. It’s been very useful to be able to monitor a known individual right through from 2W to 3W "

Tame Valley Information

I am having intermittent broadband issues at the moment so this site is being updated less often than I would like, so bear with me! Also some people have sent me emails that haven't got through, so if any of your news is missing can you resend it to me or leave a comment on this post.

Also Steve Cawthray informs me the Ladywalk Work Parties are starting again from this (and every) Wednesday at 5pm onwards. Give him a shout if you are interested in helping out. There are exciting plans for the reserve.
